Bakeries and farmers hit hard by water/power outages || BWA working to fix outages by end of day

The Barbados Water Authority says it’s working to complete repairs on the Hampton Pumping Station and have it back online by today.

The BWA says once this is completed, this will add four million gallons of water into the system.

The BWA says too …that while the majority of pumping stations are working, all of the reservoirs have low levels and it will take at least another 24 hours for them to return to normal.

According to a release, pipe-borne water has been reconnected to districts in St. Michael, Christ Church, and St. George.

However, customers connected to the Castle Grant system will be affected throughout the day as water levels in the facilities there have not risen significantly enough for pumping to resume.

Meantime, the disruption of water supply and the intermittent electrical outages have been affecting some sections of the farming community.

A conversation with President of the Barbados Agricultural Society, James Paul revealed that suppliers of fresh chicken are reporting some challenges in processing poultry.

Meantime, there has been mixed reaction among local bakeries to the recent water woes and electrical outages.

A round-up by Starcom Network News of the larger bakeries revealed that some losses were reported.

Sales and distribution manager with Purity Bakeries, Christopher Symmonds says his company has a backup plan.

Managing Director of Crumbs Bakery, Curtis Todd says they were able to make it through the first day of the power outage.

The hardest-hit appeared to be Phillips Bakery in the Ivy, St. Michael.

Manager, Roger Phillips says they suffered losses and will consider the installation of a generator.
